Letters of Commitment for VetsRide Maine Pilot Project

LETTER OF SUPPORT FOR
VETERANS’ TRANSPORTATION PILOT PROJECT IN WESTERN MAINE
December 28, 2017
David Bernhardt, Commissioner
Maine Department of Transportation
16 State House Station
Augusta, ME 04333-0016
Dear Commissioner Bernhardt,
This letter is to confirm the endorsement of AMVETS
Post 2
for the proposed “VetsRide Maine”
pilot
project to support veterans’ transportation in Oxford, Franklin and Androscoggin Counties. We can
confirm that there is strong evidence of significant and widespread unmet transportation needs which
prevent veterans from accessing needed services. Furthermore, we believe the proposed pilot project
will accomplish two meaningful objectives: (1) deliver needed rides to veterans, and (2) inform the
development of creative transportation solutions with widespread adaptability.
We further pledge to participate in the pilot project, if funded, by:
1.
Advertising the availability of the service to our (how many) members (or clients) in the
region.
2.
Designating a representative who could serve on the project steering committee.
3.
Assisting with collecting data from our members (or clients) to evaluate the program’s
effectiveness.
We will gladly offer this participation as an in-kind contribution to VetsRide Maine over the anticipated
30-month duration.
We understand that the Department does not have the estimated $150,000 in cash funding needed to
launch the pilot. However, given the tremendous opportunity before us to test innovative transportation
solutions through extensive networking, we are in hopes that remaining resources can be secured to get
VetsRide Maine off the ground. Solutions discovered in the pilot could then be implemented statewide
for all citizens needing cost-effective rides for work, health care and basic necessities.
We appreciate the leadership of MaineDOT is advancing this opportunity. Please do not hesitate to
contact me if I can provide further evidence of either the project need or the readiness of our
organization to wholeheartedly engage.
Sincerely yours,
Norman L. Newell email blackhorserecon@hotmail.com
