MVCC Meeting 04/02/2012

The meeting was opened by Chairman Gary Laweryson.

A silent prayer was given.

The Pledge of Allegiance.

The Roll Call was given.

The secretary’s report accepted as printed and all in favor.

Treasurer’s report :

12,241.90 and 3,194.00 cash and 2 organizations still owe dues. A motion made and 2nd and vote all in favor as read.

Susan McKenzie(Acting Dir. Togus):

Things move slowly and she came up through the ranks and as Dir. Of Boston she is here now full time. She has been here 5 weeksnow.The VA has gone through accreditation with 7 surveyors and Boston has always had respect for the Togus VA for their “can do Attitude. She has worked with a lot of the people on Committees The CBOC in L/A is open and staffed. In early May will have more primary care personnel. The

Med Unit is renovating to private & semi-private rooms. There is a leaky roof over OR and Dialysis Units. The staging surface outside is

Crumbling. They only have a small amount of money and everyone wants their share. They are working hard at Togus. The WWII population is dwindling. The medication & equipment is changing daily.

A new HEPC drug is very expensive. The Bangor clinic will have 2 dentists and a hygienist.

Calais the staffing need is great they need someone in area to provide

Services ad they are trying to contract with a local group instead of having the vets wait 6 or more weeks for an appointment in Bangor

A primary care dr. in area could be contracted since there is a satellite

Unit in Eastport. There are 2500 veterans in Washington county and they are having problems with appointments and providers per Kathy Hall.

Jim D. thought they could get a dr from Canada but they need to be American.

Chuck:

In March there was 758 Me. Cases and the end of March they had 1896

by the end of March and with a total of 2230 they are making a lot of

progress and they are 1st. Over 125 days cases and 37% are over the 125 days it is the lowest rate of a regional office and they are 4th in the

country. The National has 861,755 total cases and Togus is 142 days and the National is 235 days. 900 cases are in Baltimore N.Y. and every

thing is excellent.

The organizations can get into E-Benefits of my healthy vet and see what the options are.   The SNL is up and running. Everything is doing well . The letters used to be read and now they are handled electronically. The SNL is a national program and all centers will be aboard soon.

Kelley K:

They had over 24,000 calendars printed. He had books from a friend that was a Viet vet with 1arm,and an eye and was “LIVING PROOF” you can still live an inspiring life.

Caribou home has a virus and has been closed on some units.

They are recognizing 5 residents. They will have a service next Friday at the state house with the Governor. There is still no update on the 70%

And 10 senators have signed on.

Peter O:

4/9 is POW day

5/3 Prayer Breakfast

5/19 Armed Forces Day

5/26 Cabela’s day for Veterans they would like some VSO”S to have tables set up and they are expecting 1000 people +-.

Memorial Day:

Mt Vernon cemetery at 2PM and 12 pm at Old cemetery.

It will cost 460,000 for headstone alignment.

Nothing on green flag.

The Moose hunt will be for 15. Jim Zumbo a hunter would like 1 physically handicapped female to go hunting, fishing in Alaska all

The DOD will celebrate it’s 60th Anniversary on Veterans Day.

The 50th anniversary of the Vietnam war will be celebrated over the next 10 years.

They have given out 11 Gold Star Medals.

June 14th is Flag Day.

There are 48,000 veterans living in Maine.

A brochure for returning veterans will be cheaper for us to get them done than through the 50th anniversary. He wants to recognize them

But they can be mailed if need be.

Old Business:

Memorial Day the AMVETS bring an honor guard if have one.  

The Battlefield cross will be p[laced on the island it is 8’ tall and will be

Dedicated on Veterans day and will be placed the end of April or the 1st of May it weighs 25000 lbs.

The organization will have wreaths and will be placed at the cemetery on Memorial Day.

The Veterans Court is signed and looking for mentors and need more honor guards.

Jim D:

They are working with the PD’s and if they have a veteran and they can

Call someone if they need assistance. Gary suggested the mentor should be a combat veteran.

New Business:

The Camp Lejeune Water issue is still active. Netflix had a great program on Semper Fi.

Jim P:

The stop loss after 9/11 is a monthly payment of $500. For any veteran

And they need to contact Gary.

The phone number and websites are available and since the DOD does not know who these veterans are since the list burned in 1973.

Champ VA Tricare for life.
